I wish I’d had NFOViewer back at Runic. Before I went to bed, I added a global search feature. This was finicky to get working at first, but it works. The other issue I had to fix was when filtering thousands of items, I’d hit a deadlock while rendering the UI, but we debounce and stream in now.

In past support roles, I always preferred working from a Mac, but those pesky Windows System Information (*.NFO) files kept getting in the way. So tonight I built NFOViewer, a simple macOS app that opens them with zero friction.

Love it. Ship it on Windows and Linux too, please. webkit.org/blog/1786…

I was already into computers, so I got tapped to make a webpage to promote the CD. The obscenely long URL for which is printed on the back of the jewel case. One notable 90s quirk is that URLs often would often end in htm instead of html. I think this was because I made it on Windows 3.1!

The OOBE and Windows Update experience is patently awful. I’m really not exaggerating. See for yourself: www.youtube.com/watch

A lower entry point to the Mac will increase its market share and push Apple to focus on polish. Meanwhile, the MacBook Neo has rebooted the PC war at a time where Apple has footholds everywhere: www.theverge.com/report/89…

So it sounds like folks have until October 14th to enroll in extended security updates for Windows 10. On one of my machines I was able to enroll in that without having to pay anything, so it’s probably worth checking to see if you qualify.

I understand what’s happening now. Running winget upgrade triggered an update of the Windows 11 Installation Assistant which noticed I was running 24H2 and not 25H2. This unexpectedly forced an upgrade on my machine as the prompts were opaque. I fucking hate Microsoft.

Got a Windows 11 Installation Assistant update notification today. I have Windows 11 already – actively running. I let it update thinking it will just grab the latest binary. Nope! It actually starts to reinstall Windows 11 while giving me no way to abort. What. The. Fuck. Microsoft! 🤬

In follow-up to my post about Windows Update. It continues to gleefully lie to me. I open up a new Settings window and see the Check for Updates button (last checked 23 mins ago). Then it’ll say “You’re up to date” (checked at 10:15pm last night). Then I check again and there’s an update! 🤦♂️

Here’s my current update strategy on Windows btw:
-
Hop into WSL and run: omz update; sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade; brew update && brew upgrade
-
Once or twice a week: Fire up UniGetUI and force updates for most user apps.
-
About once a day: Manually run Windows Update.

Fuck you, Windows Update
Windows Update is broken. Full stop. The situation regarding unwanted reboots is unacceptable. My work machine is on Windows 11 and I’ve tried all of this shit to no avail: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ans…
None of these solutions appear to be effective at preventing automatic updates from triggering a system restart without asking me. Short of completely turning off the Windows Update service itself, which makes it impossible to get updates at all even manually.
I’ve been running an experiment lately: I specifically make a point to run Windows Update once a day and STILL I come to my machine this morning and it had restarted itself, fucking up the state of my apps. I’m not crazy: My system was already VERY UP TO DATE and Windows Update is just fucking with all of us.
Now what system update could possibly have come out between yesterday and today that REQUIRED a system restart that the system didn’t bother to notify me about a day ago?
What I want is for Windows to toss up a dialog when it needs an update. It can pop up once a day if need be for persistence sake if I’m not cooperating. Then I can choose when to apply the update. That’s all I want. It should never – EVER – fucking just restart my machine without asking me first. Ever. Don’t do it.
It’s just a batshit situation. This software does not respect the user’s wishes at all. Why do we tolerate this? It’s like the Windows Update software is designed to provide the user with settings that are nothing more than elevator buttons that don’t do anything at all. It’s like an illusion of control.
Well fuck you, Windows Update.
