In light of Apple reportedly ending Vision Pro development, I’m gonna toss a product idea out there: I don’t want smart glasses. I want glasses with an e-ink display that lets me turn them into sunglasses at the tap of a button on the frame. Full stop. No shitty transitions. That’s the product. 🕶️

We’ve recently added the concept of Mac-assed apps to our lexicon. I’d like to contribute another category of apps and devices: Smart-assed. This describes things that try to out guess the user in unhelpful and annoying ways, like turning down the air conditioning when you place the car in park.

I continue to be impressed at the capabilities of the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera without computational photography. Photos are from this afternoon with minimal edits, except mainly color adjustments, although I did run the photo of Mt. Rainier through Viveza. All grain is from the sensor!

I keep running out of disk space on macOS 26.5.2. Hundreds of gigs vanish on both of my Macs. Think I narrowed down the problem to the etcd service, which I installed through homebrew, and I notice it got an update last week… 👀 Also am monitoring my WSL environment for the same thing.

Saw John Gruber’s post about Stacks, and I think it’s an awesome app. But I clicked through the link to the dev’s website, and it looks like he’s also working on an app called Afterglow that intends to resurrect After Dark modules on modern macOS: morphing.cloud/afterglow…

Here’s another bee in my bonnet: Please, @synergy_app, figure out how to cleanly close your app on macOS. On exit, I end up with like 3 or 4 orphaned services that are impossible to kill via the terminal. Also, you present a Finder menu bar item, so why do you insist on appearing in the Dock? STAHP.

I hit that Mail bug again on iOS. Been careful since to only multiselect messages that are unread, but there’s definitely a problem with the state of the button toggle. It erroneously presented me with a Mark as Unread button.

I wish I’d had NFOViewer back at Runic. Before I went to bed, I added a global search feature. This was finicky to get working at first, but it works. The other issue I had to fix was when filtering thousands of items, I’d hit a deadlock while rendering the UI, but we debounce and stream in now.

In past support roles, I always preferred working from a Mac, but those pesky Windows System Information (*.NFO) files kept getting in the way. So tonight I built NFOViewer, a simple macOS app that opens them with zero friction.

Tonight I went through the process of bringing the classic Mac OS X app Backhoe (a terrain editor for Second Life) all the way from Objective-C and AppKit on Mac OS X 10.4 (PPC) over to Swift, Apple Silicon, modern macOS – and running on the iPad!

Anybody else notice an annoying little hitch lately when dragging and dropping files on macOS, like into Claude or a web browser drop zone?

It’d be real sweet if Mail got an update sometime to make marking all messages as read not suck. Twice this year I have inadvertently flagged all messages on all my accounts by mistake, usually due to some kind of UI lag bug on the iPad.

I’ve heard that the A18 Pro is basically a tiny M1, so my hope is that the MacBook Neo pushes Apple to focus a little bit more on performance improvements to accommodate some of the older Apple Silicon out there.

Do you think that someday through some combination of AirPlay and other magic, those overpowered Apple displays that have A-series processors in them might one day be able to let you walk up to any random display and keyboard setup and just magically run macOS wherever you go right off your phone?
